I’ve finished my McCalls 6460 dress!
I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out considering this is my first time sewing with lace.
I found the sizing for this pattern really strange. I originally cut a 14 as that was what my measurements were the closest to. However I found that was too big and ended up cutting off about an inch on either side. As there is little ease in this pattern I’m confused about why this would be. I guess my cutting accuracy could be partly at fault…
I made a keyhole opening in the back – the idea of sewing a zip onto lace nearly made me faint (ooops you can see my bra).
I also decided to cut the skirt a bit shorter than the pattern suggested. I thought the material looked a bit ‘heavy’ and ‘dense’ (if you know what I mean) so I cut off about 2 inches from the bottom and then sewed about a 2 inch hem too.
I’m also wearing a black faux snake skin belt (Grandma’s) and my T-Rex necklace (present for my 21st birthday – officially old lol).
What have you finished recently?
The pattern has the bodice attached to the lace as a partial overlay. When you made the dress with the bodice becoming an under layer and not held up at the shoulders by the over lay did you have to alter the bodice or attach it somewhere or was it snug and stiff enough to stay up on its own?

Thats do kind of you to say that! I was quite apprehensive about it but I picked a lace where there was a lot to work with which made it a lot easier!

Looks great. I know you were worried about the colour of the lining but the contrast really shows off the shape of the dress

Thanks TFWoM! 🙂 I thought them necessecary due to the nature of the fabric – maybe when I’ve been sewing for a bit longer I’ll have the skills to sew a zip on lace!

Great job! I’ve been finding that I have to pick the size one down from what the measurements say for me also or I’ll swim in what I’m making. I’m not sure why this is and it’s not the same for when I sew for most other people, BUT I’d rather it be too big than too small!! You look very cute in it btw. 🙂

Yeah! I’m glad someone is with me on this! I have made so many things too big. Maybe I’m bad at measuring myself or something but I have not made one dress the fit straight out of the packet. But strangely – like you – when I was sewing for someone else the dress I made fit. SO ODD!

So cute! Love the keyhole back!
I think I prefer it with that colour underneath rather than black. Looks very classy, and the lace detail is more obvious.

Thanks! I saw the keyhole idea on Erica Bunkers blog (have you seen it? She is PROLIFIC!) I’m still a tiny bit undecided on the lining but everyone’s encouragement is reassuring 🙂

This is so sophisticated! Lace always has an air of cocktail hour with hors d’oeuvres, your dress is fancy and sexy all at the same time. And props to the t-Rex necklace! I’d like to see a close up, I’m a big t-Rex fan!

Wow thanks for the kind words! Well I’m planning on wearing it to a ball next week so hopefully it’s up to stardard. Yes I love the t-rex necklace too. A good friend of mine gave it to me when I turned 21 – as 21 is officially prehistoric! Lol!

Yes I was quite worried about sewing with it so I picked a dense patterned fabric lol which was a lot easier to sew as there was more to it
