The other day I posted this selfie on my Instagram. I am SUPER PROUD of my Sewaholic Minoru. It is the first jacket I’ve ever made – moreover – the first sort of outerwear that I’ve completed full stop. So the fact that it is wearable is pretty amazing to me!
I asked my sister if she could take these photos in front of a garage for old times sake! This one is at my parents house… So shall we get onto this jacket?
I made my Minoru out of a heavy weight cotton. Yes it is as saffron yellow as it looks I the pictures and yes it does have a shine to it. I’m such a magpie. I originally bought this fabric to make an A-line dress but decided against it as the fabric was too heavy. It’s much better as a jacket right?
I cut my pattern as an 8 and graded down to a 4 at the hips as (we all know) Sewaholic Patterns are designed with pear shaped women in mind. My fabric was, in truth, a bit if a mare to sew with as it had a bit of a stretch to it. Holy heck it was hard to get that hood zipper in! If I was a smart person I would have interfaced around the zipper slash to prevent stretching. Alas, this only occurred to me much later. Also I’m a bit bummed that I couldn’t find an open end zipper in yellow. But you can’t get what the shops don’t have.
I’m not entirely convinced about how waterproof this jacket will be bit I’m sure it will serve as a great wind breaker! Here’s a wee close up of the front and collar:
I made a few mistakes with the construction order of my Minoru, particularly with the collar/ hood. This meant that I had to do a whole lot of hand stitching. However this was entirely my fault as I was very casual about following the instructions. I find that while I study the pictures very carefully, I often fail to read the words on the instruction sheets. Le sigh. I got there in the end!

This is what I’m working on – a yellow summer dress using simplicity 2145 and silk crepe de chine. I’m making the short sleeved version with the cross over front [the pink one at the bottom].
Oops I did it again…

A little while ago I blogged about my new sewing room (also here). Unsurprisingly, yet saddeningly, my graduation bouquet did not live forever *mega sad face*.
So I bought this little pot plant to bighten up my room:
My dad brought me the little Nessy from Loch Ness, Scotland. I put them together so they can live together and have some company.

Unfortunately I didn’t make it to sewing class on Monday. But I did had a lovely dinner with my flat mate Christine instead (home made spaghetti bolognaise in case you were wondering).
However I can tell you about one of the projects I have on the go right now. It’s another dress from the Vogue 1102 pattern. I say ‘another’ because I’ve made it once before (click here to read the post). Here’s how it turned out last time:
What I loved about this pattern was how the open back made it nice and cool as a summer dress. However when I looked at the pattern I thought it would make a great formal dress (ie for going to army dinners with my Lovely. Because of this I had made it out of a delicious wool crepe which undid all the great work of it being a summer dress.
So my plan this time is to make it in a light cotton. I chose this pink and yellow floral/ stripy print at designer textiles ($6/m) and thought I’d give it a whirl.
So far I’ve sewn the lining and the bodice and attached the two together.

So now I’m up to attaching the skirt to the bodice.
How’s your sewing project going?
During the week I found this newspaper clipping folded up inside my McCall’s 6564 pattern envelope. MEGA EXCITEMENT. I think the person who owned this pattern before me was hoping to make the coat (view c) out of this pattern to look like the newspaper clipping. It is pretty close, just needs lengthening and a sash.
THE GOLD of a sunset is captured in this exquisite evening ensemble from the new spring collection from Pierre Balmain of Paris. The designer topped a floor-length evening gown with an equally long coat done in the same brilliant goldne yellow shantung. The bodice of the gown is encrusted with lavish embroidery, shimmering in gold and sky blue.
